What comes to your mind when you see rain?....Is it its own beauty with which it patters?...Or is it the power of its beauty which makes you forget everything for a while ....?
Here is a Carnatic(Classical) song-Anandamruta karshini,Ragam-Amrutavarshini ,the raga that is supposed to get the rain.
Many great artists of medieval period and much earlier period used to sing this raga. There are lots of miracles that have taken place and are still taking place by singing and chanting krithis of Muthuswamy Dikshtar.
This reminds of my teacher who taught this song to me with its meaning...
When he(Dikshitar) began to sing in praise of the Lord in a unique style by singing this song,he caused thunderous clouds to gather over the sky and rain profusely when there were no rains in village Ettayapuram in Thirunelveli district for one year and when people yearned for the water. When he sang the line 'varshaya varshaya varshaya',it started raining heavily ,flooding the village and had to sing the same song with slight modulation.
Since Muthuswamy Dikshitar was well known for his powers, people in the village requested him to get rains in.

ReplyDeleteGood info, Akshi. I must show this to Aparna since she is learning Carnatic music from a direct descendant of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, known as Calcutta Srividya! Aparna will definitely know more about all this.
ReplyDeleteexcellent . do you have the notes?

ReplyDeleteIt's not sidroopi, it's chidroopi.... (I think you may be a Tamilian).
ReplyDeleteMost of the people will sing Sri nandanadi samrakshini, but it is actually samrakshini better to do some research work before we sing.
ReplyDeleteFor authentication Balamuralikrishna's sahityam will be perfect
It is srinandanadi samrakshani not samrakshini.for authentification refer Balamuralikrishna's sahityam
